What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? A practical guide

SEO optimizes for a results page: ten blue links, and your job is to be one of them. AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — optimizes for an answer: one paragraph, written by an AI, that names two or three products and moves on. There is no page two. Either the answer mentions you, or you don't exist for that buyer.

The engines writing those answers — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok — each have their own training data, their own retrieval sources, and their own opinions. The same question gets different answers on different engines, and those answers shift as models update. That makes AI visibility a thing you measure continuously, not audit once.

How you actually measure it

  • Tracked queries are the questions your buyers ask, phrased the way buyers phrase them: "what is the best X for Y", "alternatives to Z". Not your keywords — their questions.
  • A scan runs one tracked query across the engines you've selected and records the raw answers.
  • Mentions are detected appearances of a brand in those answers — yours and your competitors'. Aggregated, they give you share of voice: of all brand mentions in this space, how many are you?
  • Citations are the sources engines lean on. If the answers cite a comparison page you don't control, that page is writing your positioning for you.

A practical starting playbook

  1. Write 5–10 queries your actual buyers ask. If you only track "best [your category]", you're measuring one door into a building with ten.
  2. Track your competitors by name — the gap between their mentions and yours is the whole story, and it's invisible if you only watch yourself.
  3. Scan on a cadence, then watch trends, not single results. Engines are probabilistic; one scan is a sample, a month of scans is a signal.
  4. Work the citations: the pages engines cite are where your effort compounds. Getting onto one heavily-cited comparison page beats ten press releases.

Honest caveats

Answers vary run to run — that's why trends beat snapshots. Visibility differs sharply per engine (being everywhere on Perplexity and nowhere on Gemini is common, and actionable). And no tool can force an AI to recommend you; measurement tells you where you stand and which sources to influence. The rest is the same work marketing always was — done where your buyers actually are now.

AEO Explorer is a focused tool for exactly this loop: track queries, scan engines, watch mentions, citations, and share of voice — BYOK, on your own API keys.
